Keiichi Fukuda is a pioneer of the cardiac regeneration field and has been at its cutting edge for the past 20 years. He has made several contributions to both the fundamental biology of the stem cells and how to regenerate cardiomyocytes and to transplant them into the in vivo heart. He first reported that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be induced to differentiate into cardiomyocytes in vitro. He first developed a method to generate iPS cells from peripheral circulating T lymphocytes using Sendai virus containing Yamanaka factors. He found several factors such as noggin, Wnt and G-CSF, and applied them to induce cardiomyocytes. He also developed a novel method to purify the cardiomyocytes by the difference of metabolic energy pathways. He is planning to examine the transplantation of iPS-derived regenerated cardiomyocytes to the patients with congestive heart failure. He published more than 300 top-ranked papers including Nature- and Cell-sister journals. He served as an associate editor of JMCC and JCF, and a consulting editor of Circulation Research. He also worked as editorial board members for more than 10 international journals.
The author received an honorary PhD in mathematics and majored in engineering at MIT. He attended different universities over 17 years and studied seven academic disciplines. Furthermore, he self-studied and researched three disciplines, internal medicine, food nutrition, and psychology. He has spent ~30,000 hours in endocrinology research, especially diabetes. First, he studied six metabolic diseases and food nutrition during 2010 to 2013, then conducted his own diabetes research during 2014 to 2018. His approach is “quantitative and precision medicine” based on mathematics, physics, optical and electronics physics, engineering modeling, wave theory, energy theory, signal processing, computer science, big data analytics, statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. His main focus is on preventive medicine using prediction tools. He believes that the better the prediction, the more control you have. Thus far, he has written, published, and presented more than 250 medical papers, including some psychology research papers. He suffered five cardiac episodes due to severe stress from work and unhealthy lifestyle. By 2010, after taking three kinds of diabetes medications for 20 years, he endured kidney damage, foot ulcer, bladder problems, and other severe diabetes complications, including foot ulcer, thyroid, and eye. Therefore, he decided to conduct his own study and research on chronic diseases in order to save his own life. Thus far, he has spent 24,000 hours during the past 9 years researching type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its related complications. For the first four years, during 2010 to 2013, he studied six metabolic diseases and food nutrition science. Then the next five years, during 2014 to 2019, he conducted research and developed five prediction models, including metabolism, weight, fasting plasma glucose, postprandial plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1C. Since he lacked formal training in biology and chemistry, he relied on his knowledge and experiences acquired from various schools and industries.
