Prof. Dr. Jan Willem Cohen Tervaert studied Medicine at the University of Groningen where he obtained his MD in 1981. Cohen Tervaert is a Rheumatologist and Clinical Immunologist. In 1990, he obtained a PhD (cum laude). Subsequently, he worked at Harvard Medical School Boston, Groningen (as a fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences), Maastricht (as the Chair of the Department of Immunology at the Maastricht University chairing), and Rotterdam (Research Director of the Sint Franciscus Vlietland Group). Currently, he is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, University of Alberta in Edmonton. His research focuses on various rheumatic disorders. In his translational research laboratory, mitochondrial and immune abnormalities are studied in these patients with the goal to perform interventional therapeutic trials. His clinical interest is in inflammatory disorders such as vasculitis and foreign body induced rheumatic diseases such as Autoinflammatory/Autoimmunity Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants (ASIA). He is a founding member of the International Autoimmunity Consortium, the Dutch Vasculitis Scientific working group, and of the North American Vascular Biology Organization. He is a member of the European Commission expert panel on medical devices. He is a former board member of the Dutch Federation of Nephrology and the Dutch Society of Immunology. Furthermore, he is a former member of the scientific advisory board of the Dutch Minister of Health on health care coverage and a former Chairman of the Dutch Arthritis Foundation (“Reumafonds”). He is (co) author of more than 460 scientific articles. His Hirsch factor per 01-07-2021 is 93.
Prof. Dr. Selene Parekh is also known as the “Fantasy Doctor”—an orthopedic surgeon and foremost expert on sports injuries who’s fast becoming the go-to expert for the multibillion dollar fantasy sports industry. His data-driven insights and medical expertise make for powerfully accurate predictions of how anything from common sprains to devastating season-ending injuries will affect players’ careers and the success of millions of fantasy teams. Fantasy sports for Parekh is far more than a hobby: He authored and published two foundational research papers using Fantasy football data to track the epidemiology and outcomes of tendon and ligament ruptures in the NFL. Selene moved to the University of North Carolina, where he revived the foot and ankle division. He also served as a consultant to the Tar Heels athletic program. In 2009, Selene moved his practice to the North Carolina Orthopaedic Clinic and Duke University, where he is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is also an Adjunct Faculty member at Duke’s Fuqua Business School. He is integrally involved in the teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows. His practice is focused on diseases and surgeries of the foot and ankle. In the Department, he is the Director of Digital Strategy and Innovation.

Maria Graça completed her Ph.D. at the Sports Faculty of Porto University and PT, and her Master studies at the University of Aveiro. She is the clinical director of Corpus Salut, a premier Aquatic Physiotherapy service, and is an expert in physiotherapy in older adults. Her research subject is aging problems. She has been lecturing since 2004 at the School of Health Sciences, University of Aveiro, and published in international journals, and has been serving as a revisor member of recognized Portuguese journals.

Prof. Dr. Horst Claassen is a human medicine as well as biology with a specialization in anthropology and is a professor of anatomy. Prof. Dr. James Cheng-Chung Wei is Attending Physician and Professor of Chung Shan Medical University Hospital (CSMUH) in Taichung, Taiwan. He is also Chief of the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology and Director of the Chinese Medicine Clinical Trial Center at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan. After completing his training in rheumatology and clinical immunology at Taichung Veterans General Hospital and Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Dr Wei undertook a clinical fellowship at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, UK, under the supervision of Professor Andrei Calin, one of the world’s leading experts in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Dr Wei subsequently pursued a research fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Division of Rheumatology in California, USA, under Professor David Yu, investigating the pathogenesis of spondyloarthritis. Prior to his current roles, Dr Wei was appointed Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Chia-Yi Veterans Hospital in Chia-Yi, Taiwan, obtaining his PhD based on his study of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of AS. His current major interests are translational research in ankylosing spondylitis, clinical trials and big data research in rheumatology.
Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud El-Shazly is the Head of Pharmaceutical Biology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, the German University in Cairo, Cairo, Egypt. He was graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain-Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, with a general grade excellent with honor in 2000. Following graduation, he pursued his postgraduate studies as a teaching and research assistant at the Department of Pharmacognosy at the same institute. After obtaining his postgraduate diploma, he traveled to Germany (Jacobs University Bremen, Bremen, Germany) to pursue his master's and Ph.D. studies. In 2006, he received his master’s degree in nanomolecular science, and he was offered a position at the same institute to complete his Ph.D. focusing on the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates and natural products. In 2009, he received his Ph.D. and went back to Egypt to join his home institute as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain-Shams University. In 2011, he received an offer to work at the Graduate Institute of Natural Products, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He spent there 2.5 years working as a postdoctoral fellow researching in different fields including natural product isolation, structural elucidation, and determination of their biological activity. This postdoctoral experience assisted him to polish his knowledge and experience through guiding master and Ph.D. students in their research. In 2015, he was promoted to associate professor at the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain-Shams University. In 2017, he joined the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, the German University in Cairo. In March 2021, he was promoted to a full professor in pharmacognosy and natural products chemistry.

For over 25 years, Dr. Sampen has been dedicated to medical research focusing on knee osteoarthritis (OA) and associated knee joint pain and disc degeneration-induced low back pain. Dr. Sampen has made crucial contributions to OA pain research by increasing the mechanistic understanding of the causes and progression of OA; developing a novel strategy for treating OA as a pre-clinical study. She published scientific key findings in close to 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. Her dedication to biomedical research has been honored by national and international recognition, in the form of the Arthritis National Research Foundation Scholar Award, Osteoarthritis Research Society International Investigator Award, and the Kappa Delta Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society. Dr. Sampen’s research has been continuously funded by federal grants (NIH, DoD, VA), private foundations, and pharmaceutical companies over the past 20 years. As an educator, Dr. Sampen taught extensively in many key biochemical classes, mentored more than 70 trainees, including postdoctoral fellows, orthopedic residents, spine surgeon fellows, graduate and college students, and medical students.
