Director of Perioperative EchocardiographyButler Health SystemUSA
Dr. Jeffrey C. Astbury is the Vice Chair of Cardiovascular Services and Director of Perioperative Echocardiography at Butler Health System. He is also an active member in both the Council on Perioperative Echocardiography (COPE) and the American Society of Echocardiography. Dr. Astbury has always embraced many disciplines of the sciences and medicine. While earning degrees in Physics, Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, he performed hemodynamics research of betablockade on aortic input impedance. As an artificial heart engineer, he utilized echocardiography to evaluate volume status and adjust pump flow rates. During Medical School, Dr. Astbury performed award-winning research in comparison in efficacy of preservation solutions for heart transplantation. As a Faculty Cardiac Anesthesiologist, Dr. Astbury has published research on the effects of general anesthesia on mitral regurgitation and other aspects of transesophageal echocardiography. In 1999, Dr. Astbury was in the first Certification Class of the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) in Perioperative Echocardiography. In 2019, he became the first physician to be NBE Certified five times since its inception (1999, 2002, 2008, 2015, 2019). In 2019, Dr. Astbury was the first private practice physician ever appointed to the Council on Perioperative Echocardiography Steering Committee, representing a large portion of echocardiographers in the Private Sector. His tasks included writing articles on how to excel as a perioperative echocardiographer in the private practice setting and how to use the American Society of Echocardiography to achieve your goals. For most of his career, Dr. Astbury practiced and taught echocardiography to physicians, often Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellows and attending Anesthesiologists. For many years, he has mentored physicians to become clinically competent and pass the NBE examination and become “Board-Certified” through the NBE. He also actively promotes the FASE status and serves on the FASE Recruitment Committee and guides physicians and sonographers through the process to become a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE). Recently Dr. Astbury has written articles to reach the perioperative echocardiographers in private practice, which stress the utility and necessity of the American Society of Echocardiography’s many resources. These include “Achieving Excellence in Perioperative Echocardiography for Non-Academic Practices” and “The American Society of Echocardiography and Private Practice Echocardiographers”. Through the ASE and COPE, he hopes to engage with many of the perioperative echocardiographers around the world. Currently Dr. Astbury specializes in Structural Heart Disease Procedures and other ultrasound-guided procedures, such as ultrasound-guided vascular access, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS). He advocates the use of ultrasound to provide additional patient safety in the preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative periods. On June 12, Dr. Astbury spoke at the Structural Heart Disease Session of the 2022 ASE Scientific Sessions in Seattle. His talk was titled “Ultrasound-Guided Vascular Access
