John S. Baras received the B.S. in Electrical Eng. from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1970, and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard Univ. in 1971 and 1973. Professor Baras was the Founding Director of the Institute for Systems Research (one of the first six NSF Engineering Research Centers) from 1985 to 1991. Since August 1973 he has been with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and the Applied Mathematics Faculty, at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he is currently a Professor holding a permanent joint appointment with the ISR. In February 1990 he was appointed to the Lockheed Martin Chair in Systems Engineering. Since 1992 Dr. Baras has been the Founding Director of the Maryland Hybrid Networks Center (HyNet) ) (an industry-university-government consortium, with substantial support from DoD, NASA and industry focusing on hybrid wireless networks). Among his awards are: a 1978 Naval Research Laboratory Research Publication Award; the 1980 Outstanding Paper Award of the IEEE Control Systems Society; 1983 and 1993 Alan Berman Research Publication Awards from NRL; 1991 Outstanding Invention of the Year Award from the University of Maryland for the invention of a “Low Complexity CELP Speech Coder”; 1994 Outstanding Invention of the Year Award from the University of Maryland for the invention of “A System Design for a Hybrid Network Data Communications Terminal Using Asymmetric TCP/IP to Support Internet Applications”; November 1995, Outstanding Contributions to Seniors Award, from the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Senior Council; January 1996, Outstanding Paper Award, “ATM in Hybrid Networks”, presented at Design SuperCon 1996 Conference, Santa Clara, CA; April 1996, MIPS Research Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions in Advancing Maryland Industry for work done with Hughes Network Systems; December 1998, the Mancur Olson Research Achievement Award, from the Univ. of Maryland College Park (award recognizes faculty whose research achievements have been extraordinary); December 2002, Best paper Award at the 23rd Army Science Conference, Orlando, Florida; September 2004, Best paper Award 2004 Wireless Security conference. Dr. Baras is a Fellow of the IEEE, SIAM and AAAS. He was elected Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, March 2006. He has consulted extensively with industry and government on various automation, systems and telecommunication problems. He has served in the following: Board of Governors of the IEEE Control Systems Society; IEEE Engineering R&D Committee; Aerospace Industries Association advisory committee on advanced sensors; IEEE Fellow evaluation committee. He is currently serving on the editorial board of Mathematics of Control, Signals, and Systems, the editorial board of Systems and Control: Foundations and Applications, the editorial board of IMA J. of Mathematical Control and Information, the editorial board of Systems Automation-Research and Applications. Dr. Baras is a world renowned researcher in communication and automation systems, has received many awards for his papers and research, has more than 450 technical papers published and was the editor of the book “Recent Advances in Stochastic Calculus”, Springer, 1990. He holds three patents (all in signal processing) and has four pending. He has graduated 42 PhD students and 70 MS students. He has sponsored and supervised 32 postdoctoral scholars. Dr. Baras is internationally known for his leadership of industry-university-government consortia and has collaborated effectively with both industry and government scientists and engineers. Professor Baras’ research interests include: wireless networks, sensor networks, distributed networked control systems, satellite and hybrid communication networks, integrated network management systems, fast Internet services via hybrid, satellite and wireless networks, network security and intrusion detection, stochastic systems, robust control of nonlinear systems, real-time parallel architectures for nonlinear signal processing, intelligent control systems, expert and symbolic systems for control and communication systems synthesis, distributed parameter systems, planning and optimization, real-time architectures for intelligent control, speech and image compression and understanding, biomimetic algorithms and systems for signal processing and sensor networks, model-based systems engineering, model-based software engineering, integration of logic programming and nonlinear programming for trade-off analysis, object oriented modeling of complex engineering systems, validation and verification of systems models and designs, intelligent manufacturing of smart materials, integrated product-process design. He is widely credited for inventing and establishing Internet over satellite and hybrid networks and for initiating the new “component based” approach to wireless network modeling and design. He has more than 30 years experience and contributions to defense related problems. Professor Baras was the initial principal architect of the ISR M.S. program in Systems Engineering. He arranged for industry participation in advisory and teaching capacity. More recently Dr. Baras has been heavily involved in the development of new core courses for systems engineering. These include courses on systems modeling, systems engineering fundamentals, system requirements analysis, system trade-off analysis and tools, system validation-verification and testing and systems integration. In his efforts to teach systems thinking at the undergraduate level to all Engineering majors he is developing three courses, with the objective to introduce in the foundational core for engineering education the key concepts of system models, controls and signals in a way that integrates computer related ideas and constructs into these foundations from the start. His efforts address the often emphasized need for a new integrative approach to engineering (holistic rather than in parts) which in turn addresses the needs for modular design, systems thinking and team work.

Dr. Motamed directs Cardiovascular Research Group and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at McMaster University (https://www.motamedlab.com/). She holds associate faculty memberships in the Department of Computing and Software, in the School of Biomedical Engineering, and in the School of Computational Science and Engineering. She is a member of the Thrombosis & Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI) and McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA). Moreover, Dr. Motamed is a research affiliate faculty member at the Institute for Medical Engineering & Science and Harvard-MIT Biomedical Engineering Center at MIT (Cambridge, USA). Her research interests are mainly in the areas of translational and basic cardiovascular mechanics to develop long-needed quantitative diagnostic, predictive, and intervention-optimization tools for cardiovascular diseases to support personalized interventions and clinical decision making. A major part of her work has been dedicated to development and validation of advanced multi-scale computational-mechanics and imaging-based algorithms for patient-specific modelling of cardiovascular system with the following objectives. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of her research, Dr. Motamed extensively collaborates with engineers, clinical scientists, surgeons and cardiologists in Canada, USA and Europe. • To develop long needed quantitative diagnostic, predictive and intervention-optimization tools for cardiovascular diseases to support personalized interventions and clinical decision making • To design, evaluate and optimize cardiovascular devices such as transcatheter heart valves and vascular stents • To uncover causes of cardiovascular pathologies through solving complex biomedical problems • To re-classify diseases and to establish guidelines for clinical interventions • To lead multidisciplinary collaborative efforts to translate engineering-based findings and developments into clinical practice • To develop monitoring tools for cardiovascular health to be integrated in future smart houses and smart vehicles Dr. Motamed is a Joseph Ip Distinguished Engineering Fellow at McMaster. She served as the Chair of the NSERC Research Tool and Instruments (RTI) Selection Committee for Mechanical Engineering for the Competition 2021. Dr. Motamed serves on the editorial board of Scientific Reports, a Nature Group journal. She is also a member of the Editorial Board in the Journal of Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. She was a handling Editor in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine and a Guest Editor in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology in Novel methods to advance diagnostic and treatment value of medical imaging for cardiovascular disease. She has been a scientific consultant to a number of medical device companies. She also has 9 years of industrial experience in the automotive R&D sector with a proven record of leadership and project and team management. She is currently using her vehicle design experience to contribute to the development of future smart vehicles. Her group is also working towards developing human health monitoring tools for future smart houses.

I joined Salford University as Lecturer in Fluid Mechanics in March 2016 and have introduced new research themes in CFD, nanofluid dynamics, multiphysical electromagnetic flows, rocket propulsion, coating simulation, solar nanotechnology, biomedical fluid dynamics, supercritical thermodynamics and thermo-elasticity. Earlier in my career I developed and delivered the MEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering degree at Sheffield Hallam University (2007-2012) and led research in theoretical biofluid mechanics and computational rocket heat transfer. I taught aerodynamics, thermofluids, energy systems, railway fluid mechanics, propulsion, heat transfer, aero-structures and solid mechanics. I have collaborated with international research groups in the USA, Malaysia, Holland, France, Canada, Pakistan, India and Algeria. My research work/supervision has resulted in 3 recent awards: in 2017 (RAEs Teddy Fielding Prize, awarded to my BEng (Hons) aeronautical student Betty Islam for her final year project on aircraft wing water ingress simulation, based on a Lufthansa Malta placement secured by Mr. Ali Kadir which led to a journal publication in Arabian Journal of Science and Engineering in May 2019), in 2018 (Vice Chancellor Award for Research Excellence for my sustained output in leading high impact factor international journals and integration of new research themes into the engineering curriculum) and in 2019 (Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship for Aerospace Research, awarded to my PhD student, S. Kuharat). I have been ranked as “internationally excellent” in the Internal Peer Review Process (March 2019). In May 2017 I was appointed to the editorial board of Journal of Nanofluids – the only journal in the world which focuses specifically on this key area of engineering science- in recognition of sustained contributions in nanofluid simulation in inter-disciplinary areas including medicine, energy and aerospace. I have been UK editor for the Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology (Singapore/USA) since 2010 and have coordinated many contributions in the areas of biological heat and mass transfer. I have developed new pathways for high-temperature corrosion simulation with Mr. Ali Kadir, Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. I have chaired special themes at international conferences including most recently at the 20th Int. Conf. Heat Transfer/Fluid Mechanics, Istanbul, Turkey, August (2018) where I also presented multiple works. I have co-edited a special volume, Modeling and Simulation in Engineering Sciences (2016) which attracted dozens of international contributions. I have also published 4 invited book chapters on state-of-the-art techniques including computational bio-nano-fluid dynamics (Computational Approaches in Biomedical Nano-Engineering, Wiley, USA, 2019) and multi-physical electro-magnetic propulsion fluid dynamics (Mathematical Modelling: Methods, Applications & Research, Nova Science, New York, 2018). Much of my work has appeared in the leading journals in their respective fields with high impact factors. At Salford University I have mobilized a new thrust in nanotechnology and have combined biology, energy sciences, computational methods and nanoscience to design multiple MSc projects, 2 new PhD projects (in solar and corrosion protection) and new collaborations with engineering faculty. I have embraced a strongly inter-disciplinary approach in my work which is in line with the ethos of the new unified School of Science, Engineering and Environment. My book “Giants of Engineering Science” (2003) which was translated into Chinese in 2008, has also been mentioned on the profile of Professor K.J. Bathe of MIT, a world authority in computational mechanics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus-Jürgen_Bathe). My work has received 44,000 thousand reads on Researchgate (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/O_Beg ), and is rated 41.14 which is in the top 5% of all members of this international database. I have developed many new areas of integrated multi-physical modelling including electro-kinetic nanofluid dynamics, which has been recognized, for example, with my work being published in the Harvard Medical School journal, Microvascular Research.
